  • Hangar Flying

Randle Corfman, President Minnesota Pilots Association|Oct 1, 2019

I hope you were able to read the September installment of Hangar Flying, but if you didn’t please retrieve that issue of the Minnesota Flyer. In that article I used Charles Dickens first sentence of “A Tale of Two Cities” and modified it from “They were the best of times. They were the worst of times” to, “They were the best of airports. They were the worst of airports” and I pointed toward one airport, KDTL, as a best airport. I also alluded to an unnamed airport that was on the other end of... Full story

  • "DOC" at Holman Field

    Ray Pittman|Oct 1, 2019

In July, St. Paul's Holman Field was visited by the beautifully restored B-29 "DOC." The public was able to tour the cockpit and rides were also available during the two day stay. The bomber was discovered in the Mojave desert by Tony Mazzolini in 1987 and taken to Wichita, Kansas. After extensive restoration work, on July 7th, 2016, it flew for the first time since 1956. There are currently only two B-29's flying in the world. The other is "Fifi." For 42 years, until Doc came along, Fifi was... Full story

  • Accelerated Instruction - Is It For You?

    Jim Hanson|Oct 1, 2019

Jim Hanson runs the airport at Albert Lea, MN. He sells and leases airplanes-and among his clients is Accelerated Aviation Instruction-a flight training operation also based at Albert Lea. Jim writes from experience-he has had a Flight Instructor rating for 53 years, and has operated numerous flight schools. Though he mentions Accelerated Aviation Instruction, Inc. (based in Albert Lea) to illustrate points, he does not operate the flight school. Want to start a brawl at the Pilot Lounge? Ask... Full story

Milaca has one of the nicest grass runways in the state which proved to be an ideal setting for this Short Take Off and Landing event. There were over 75 aircraft that flew in for the event including two helicopters, with 27 experienced pilots in the competition to see who could land and takeoff in the shortest combined distance. • "42-year-old Mystery solved with back issue of Minnesota Flyer."

    Jim Hanson|Oct 1, 2019

I've been a subscriber to the Minnesota Flyer since I learned to fly in 1963-and I save the back issues. I was cataloging some old issues last week-(and of course, I had to take the time to read what was important back then)! From the May, 1969 issue, I saw the "New type of STOL Modifications" column-and it solved a 42-year-old mystery. In 1977, we purchased the FBO at Owatonna, Minnesota from Thunderbird. Tucked up into the rafters in the attic were two crates with STOL leading edges, and wingt... Full story

  • FAAST

Heather McNevin, FAAST Team Lead Safety Rep|Oct 1, 2019

As we enter the fall season, the time for migratory bird activity is upon us. Very few pilots have had any training on bird activity, bird strikes, or reporting of bird strikes. While not a frequently occurring hazard, there are an average of 26 bird strikes per day that are reported across the United States. Imagine how many strikes that go unreported. Now, lets run through a few facts on bird strikes. • There are up to 20 billion birds! • Worldwide, bird strikes are responsible for cau... Full story

James D. Lakin PhD MD FACP, CFI, CFII, MEI, Airline Transport Pilot, FAA Sen Medical Advisor|Oct 1, 2019

A couple of months back an older gentleman came in for a flight physical. He’d flown a number of years ago and wanted to “get back in the game” now that all the kids were through college and on their own. His health record looked good. He seemed a reasonable candidate for hopping back into the cockpit. Then we tested his vision. Much to our mutual surprise he was blind as a bat! Well, not really blind but he was having trouble seeing 20/100. In case you’ve forgotten what the funny numbers... Full story

  • Airport of the Month

    Tom Foster|Oct 1, 2019

Warren is the seat of Marshall County and the home of the "Settlers Square Historical Museum." It's a great museum with all kinds of exhibits including a 1977 Ford LTD. The old Ford is beat up. It has a badly cracked windshield, a broken headlight and a bunch of dents in the hood. Once a patrol car for the Sheriff's department, it's an artifact from the best documented encounter between earthlings and extra-terrestrials. People come from all over to check it out, so visit Warren and join the... Full story

If there is a story you feel is worth repeating, please send your suggestion to me at verlena@mnflyer.com and I will be happy to consider it for a future issue. V. Jones... Full story
