  • Minnesota's 'Baron of Beechcraft' Closes Out Career

    Jeremy D. Dando|Dec 1, 2021

One of the great things about visiting Anoka County-Blaine Airport (KANE) is you never know what is hidden behind a given set of hangar doors. It could be a Cessna 152, or something exotic like a YAK-18 or an Aero Vodochody L-29. You might even meet a Minnesota aviation legend like Don Rott. On a cool October day, I had the great pleasure to sit down with Don and reminisce. Before our meeting I did not know him, but after I had, I was a richer man for our conversation, after getting a glimpse...

The hands-down highlight of the summer aviation season is the EAA fly-in at Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Whether you call it Oshkosh, EAA, or AirVenture, the gathering remains one of the biggest aviation events in the world. Aircraft range from single-seat home built aircraft to giant C-17 cargo planes. Located just over 200 miles from the Twin Cities, Wittman Regional Airport is a short flight from local airspace. The Fisk arrival can be tricky with many planes from all over the U.S. queuing up to land...

The summer aviation season hit its stride with the Pan-O-Prog Fly-In July 11 at Airlake Airport in Lakeville. This year's participants were treated to warm temperatures and calm winds in the morning. The pancake breakfast was a huge success with over 1,850 people served. A total of 85 aircraft flew in. There was great variety in the planes that appeared. While the majority of the aircraft present came from the seven-county metro area, Detroit Lakes, St. Cloud, and Racine, Wisconsin were...

Minnesota's largest air show produced record-setting attendance during its post-pandemic return in late June. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels were among the high-flying crowd-pleasers this year at the Duluth Air and Aviation Expo. "In 20 years, this was the most challenging show I've ever worked on," said Ryan Kern, airshow president and founder. Organizers developed four COVID-19- related planning contingencies to meet state and federal health requirements. Saturday set a one-day show attendance reco...

  • Planes, Cars Pack Breezy Point Aviation Day

    Jeremy D. Dando|Jun 1, 2021

This year's version of the Breezy Point Aviation Days took place Saturday, May. 1. A sunny and unseasonably warm forecast produced lots of visiting aircraft. A quick count tallied almost 80 total aircraft, and those attending enjoyed a pig roast, static displays, emergency vehicles and a medivac helicopter, pilots and friends social time, and a well-attended classic car show. The first aircraft touched down on Runway 35, but a wind shift soon favored Runway 17. Before long, a steady stream of...

  • Perfect Conditions, Camaraderie Drive ICEPORT 2021

    Jeremy D. Dando|Apr 1, 2021

Organizer Mark Priglmeier reports ICEPORT 2021 was a huge success. A record-setting number of airplanes visited Mille Lacs Lake for the early March event. According to Priglmeier, the goal of the ice flying event has remained simple since its inception. Create a special place for pilots to spend time during the winter while enhancing their proficiency. "Yes, we blasted our record. But it's not about how many planes we get," Priglmeier said, recapping the March 6 event. "It's about people...

Highlights and photos: Courtesy of aviation writer/photographer Jeremy D. Dando Aviators in Minnesota are hardy folks. They do not let the long cold winters put an end to their flying. Not wanting to remain in hibernation the first fly in of 2020 was organized for 01 January, 2020! John Holand had the idea for a New Year's Day fly-in and did all the heavy lifting to get a group of aviators interested in heading up to Brainerd from the Twin Cities area. If you needed additional motivation to go... Full story
