MARK R. BAKER
1957 -
Mark Baker, born in St. Paul, Minnesota, grew up in White Bear Lake. His passion for aviation began in the 1960s when he experienced his first flight in a Cessna 170 during a "penny-a-pound" ride event. By the spring of 1978, he had soloed, earning his private pilot license later that year. Over the years, he added numerous ratings to his credentials, including seaplane and commercial certificates.
For many years, Baker dedicated his time to restoring vintage airplanes. His career also involved extensive corporate flying, with Home Depot, Gander Mountain, and Scott's Miracle-Gro. His first aircraft was a Cessna 150, which he later sold to join the Lake Elmo Flying Club, enabling him to fly regularly. After relocating to Florida for work, he purchased a Cessna Cardinal to accommodate his family. Over the years, he has owned numerous aircraft, including a Piper Super Cub, which he frequently flies, adapting it for floats, skis, or wheels to suit the season.
Baker's 35 years of engagement in general aviation prepared him to assume leadership of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) in 2013. As CEO, he has been a vocal advocate for the general aviation (GA) community, leveraging member feedback to drive change. He leads the AOPA Political Action Committee, lobbying for initiatives such as unleaded fuel development and the FAA Reauthorization Bill. He has also strengthened partnerships with aviation organizations like the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), fostering collaboration within the GA community.
Under his leadership, AOPA has championed initiatives in flight instruction, safety products, legal assistance, airport enhancements, and communication tools. Baker has played a pivotal role in programs such as FAA BasicMed, AOPA Rusty Pilots, and high school STEM aviation curricula. Beyond advocacy, he has flown Young Eagles and frequently speaks at aviation seminars and events, amassing over 7,500 flight hours.
In addition to his aviation efforts, Baker has contributed to the City of Hope, a California-based organization specializing in biomedical research, treatment, and education, further showcasing his commitment to impactful leadership.
