Serving Midwest Aviation Since 1960

License to Learn: December 2014

Time flys

How did December get here so fast? It must be all the fun we’ve been having at aviation events, and interesting people we’ve met this past year, that have made time fly by at warp speeds!

This issue of the Flyer has been most enjoyable to put together! We think readers will be delighted with the Super Cub Santa story on our inside cover. Thank you Julie Sturek (that moment. frozen. Photography), for your captivating photos. A tip of our wings to Randy Corfman for inspiring us with yet another reason to fly in the winter months.

Another salute goes to Stars of the North (page 15) for their Taking Girls to New Heights program. Stars of the North photographer Dawne Barrett captured the event in pictures rather nicely. Stars, we agree with your belief that the earlier in life children are encouraged to believe in their dreams, the better chance they have of realizing those dreams.

A hearty congratulations to Air Space Minnesota for their giant step forward on creation of the very impressive Aviation Learning Center (page 5). Thanks to Larry Grace Photography for accompanying images.

Author Paul Sailer provides an engaging account and inspiring photos of the French village commemoration for Minnesota triple ace pilot Major Don Beerbower (page 6).

Community airports looking for a role model on how to become more active in, and relevant to your community, as well as how to make a positive impact for General Aviation now and into the future, read about the high impact efforts of The Blaine Airport Promotions Group (BAPG) at KANE (page 16).

The MnDot Aeronautics Bulletin always offers great material, thanks to all the fine folks at the Office of Aeronautics (pages 11-14).

Columnists Tom Lymburn provides The Mystery Airplane (page 22), Tom Foster, the Airport of the Month (page 17), and Dr. James D Lakin offers valuable advice regarding pilot’s ‘plan continuation errors’ in his Aeromedical Forum (page 18).

Thank you, Noel Allard for sharing your treasured memories of Sherm Booen as we wrap up our 12-month series on our esteemed founder (page 23). Fear not, readers, we are planning some new information formats for Sherm in the coming year.

A warm welcome to new advertisers, Ascend Aviation and Coldwell Banker Northwoods Realty. We look forward to serving you! We encourage readers to support our advertisers to strengthen all ties in aviation. When you stop by, tell them the Minnesota Flyer sent you!

Our final thought as we close out this last issue of 2014, from our family to yours, we wish you a very Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, and Happy Holidays to all as you celebrate in your most meaningful way during this season. See you in 2015!

Happy Landings!
