  • Fall Flying Reflections

Randle Corfman, President Minnesota Pilots Association|Oct 1, 2017

Though the event will have transpired by the time this article is published, at the time of this writing I am planning to launch on a mission to partake in the annual Flying Cloud Air Tour, commonly known as the Fall Colors Tour, which is held annually in memory of David Jaranson of Side Lake, Minnesota. David was special, in that his love of flying his green and white super cub was unsurpassed. He loved life and flying. We treasure the memories this young man gave us as he kept a positive... Full story

  • Second generation Satnan Avionics thrives

    C.M. Swanson|Oct 1, 2017

Mark Satnan's fond childhood memories of time spent with his father in South Dakota impacted the way he lives today. "He worked nights all the time," said Satnan. "He'd drag me out to the shop at night and have me start taking the interior of an airplane out. That's actually how I first got started, taking interiors out of airplanes so he could work on them." After high school Satnan got a job driving truck delivering parts but it didn't take him long to realize that wasn't the job for him. He... Full story

    C.M. Swanson|Oct 1, 2017

This year's 75 Annual Fly-In Breakfast and Ping Pong Ball Drop at Hector Municipal Airport offered a close up view of some pretty impressive aircraft. Event organizer Ed Newberg issued an invitation to Afton, Wisconsin residents Barry Hammarback and Dave Schmitz to bring their 1962 UH1 "Huey" helicopter. The Huey has attended veteran's and other aviation related events to allow new generations to become more aware of the experiences of their father's and grandfather's. "We thought the Huey is... Full story

  • Well earned smiles

    Rick Mercil|Oct 1, 2017

The joys of flying typically bloom in the summer for most pilots. They finally open their hangar, get some light to shine on that bird and clean off that layer of dust that forms from months of hibernation. For me it's a little different. My Supercub stays on its floats all winter. It makes its way into the shop two or three times throughout the winter for minor maintenance and/or a new mod here or there. The Cub is a working airplane and winter is a time to get it tuned up and dialed in for... Full story

  • ADS-B IN-Help or hindrance?

    Jim Hanson|Oct 1, 2017

I've been flying with ADS-B IN for over a year now. I use a Stratus 2S receiver linked to Foreflight Pro on my I-pad. I chose to go the portable route, because I fly a variety of airplanes-from a King Air to a Kitfox. WHICH IS BETTER XM WEATHER OR ADS-B? Since most of my time is spent IFR and cross country, the system does a fair job of depicting weather data and precipitation. It's nice to have weather updated enroute. I also have a Garmin 496 with Sirius XM weather subscription. Which is... Full story

    C.M. Swanson|Oct 1, 2017

Windom Municipal Airport’s August 27 Fly-In Breakfast provided an opportunity for 32 private aircraft beauties to line the field next to the taxiway like models on a spotlit runway. A hearty breakfast of pancakes and French Toast was served by the Lions Club. Jay B Kipfer brought his restored JD pulling tractors, more eye candy for Fly-In attendees. Local residents joined regional pilots who flew in for in the day’s events that not only drew the community together, but added to the growing int... Full story

  • Airport of the Month

    Tom Foster|Oct 1, 2017

Even if you went to school 50 years ago in some exotic place like New York, there's a good chance your ring or year book came from Owatonna. Jostens (aka, Newell Brands) is probably the country's largest manufacturer of scholastic memorabilia. Founded in 1897 by Otto Josten, the company is just one of several that make Owatonna an economic success. Other local industries include tool manufacturing, insurance, and fabricating heating/air-conditioning equipment. One important reason for the... Full story

March 29 this year, a Boeing 737-300 (AA 1353) was on short final heading into KABQ down in Albuquerque when the First Officer suddenly slumped forward, unconscious. Fortunately, the Captain noticed, summoned paramedics, and landed the plane safely. Attempts to revive the First Officer were unsuccessful, the presumed cause of death being a heart attack. Fortunately, life-threatening incapacitation of pilots in a commercial setting is rare. Even more rare is the flight's safety being... Full story
