Larry and Karen Helwig invite aviators
Karen and Larry Helwig house their Bonanza V35 in a hangar at Carlton County Moose Lake Airport where they invited people, just for the fun of it...oh, and the food, of course.
People gather in conversational groups at the Helwig's hangar at the Moose Lake Airport.
Samantha Youngs (10) attended the Helwig's Pilot Bash with parents Steven and Andrea Youngs. She even took time to draw an airplane on the Minnesota Flyer whiteboard. Good job, Samantha!
Gary Pangerl and Walt Ray flew in from Mora in this Cessna 172 Skyhawk. Though the morning weather was overcast with a threat of rain, the day turned out beautifully for a gathering of fellow pilots and passengers, engaging aviation conversations, and a picnic lunch fresh off the grill.
Paul Vollmar from Barnum bought this RV8A kit plane from Florida. It has a 180 horsepower engine that makes it fly as sleek as it looks. When an aircraft shines like that, it shows the TLC administered by its owner.
Pilot Jim Behrens keeps Larry Helwig company as Helwig mans the grill while Sue Behrens, Jim's wife lends a hand in another part of the hangar. Behrens and Helwig are long time flying buddies. Chad and Shannon Simpson and Gemma, their Yorkie, arrived at Carlton County Moose Lake Airport (KMZH) from Fredrick, Wisconsin in their Cessna 172. The Simpsons were on their way to a function in Moose Lake but stopped by Larry and Karen Helwig's hangar to say hi to folks gathering there for the Moose Lake Pilot Bash on June 6. Nick Staffor's 1958 150 Cessna. is also parked. Pulling in is a Cessna 172 Skyhawk.
Jack Westerlund enjoys the Moose Lake Pilot Bash in the Helwig's hangar. Jack has many a story about his time servicing the Tsunami, an illustration of which he drew on the white board.

Sometimes people in aviation want to get together just for the fun of it. That is exactly what Larry and Karen Helwig did in June at their hangar at the Carlton County Moose Lake Airport. Of course, fun includes hot dogs, brats and chips, which the Helwig's supplied on the warm, misty, summer day.
Attendees enjoyed swapping aviation stories, sharing ideas, and investigating each other's aircraft. Some of the aircraft at the gathering included a Cessna 172 Skyhawk, a Bonanza V35, and an RB8A kit plane.
It is not required that one fly when visiting a hangar. Folks also arrived by automobile. It was a chance to get together with those of like mind to enjoy time hangar flying, with or without a lane.
It just goes to show, any time, any where, aviators are just plain happy to talk aviation.
