  • Airport of the Month: Albert Lea

    Tom Foster, Minnesota Flyer|Feb 1, 2014

Lieutenant Albert Miller Lea was a member of the First U.S. Dragoons based at Fort Des Moines. He was also an engineer and the cartographer for Zebulon Pike. In 1835 Lt. Lea mapped much of southern Minnesota. Pike told him to "name something after yourself". He picked a large lake next to a town site which was originally called "Paradise Prairie" and is now the City of Albert Lea. A native of Tennessee, Lea fought with the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. His son, Lt. Commander...

    Noel Allard, Minnesota Flyer|Feb 1, 2014

Noel Allard This is the first in a series of thumbnails of the important Minnesota aviation pioneers. It is my intention to profile the persons who had the greatest impact on bringing aviation to the public in our state from the files of the Minnesota Aviation Hall of Fame. • As I Recall: Part I

    Jim Hanson, Minnesota Flyer|Feb 1, 2014

Jim Hanson I save all my back issues of aviation magazines—literally, over 3000 pounds worth in the last 50 years. My wife calls me a “pack rat” — a “hoarder” — I tell her it is for “research”. In reality, I do use them for research — if people want to know anything about an aircraft they are considering, I can usually find them a pilot report. Business use aside — the old magazines are just fun to look through! If my own collection of magazines were not enough, people have given me a numbe...

  • Bill addresses pilot fatigue

    Feb 1, 2014

U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) introduced the Safe Skies Act, which would ensure that America’s cargo plane pilots are sufficiently rested and alert before they fly. "Whether flying a passenger or a cargo plane, pilot fatigue can have tragic consequences," said Klobuchar. "That’s why we need consistent rules throughout the aviation system to help prevent any tragedies. This bill will extend current FAA pilot fatigue regulations to cargo pilots so they have the rest they need to stay saf...

  • Mystery Airplane: February 2014

    Tom Lymburn, Minnesota Flyer|Feb 1, 2014

In 1933, Professor Heinrich Focke resigned as Technical Director of Focke-Wulf to purse his interest in rotary winged aircraft. Beginning by license building Don Juan de la Cierva's C.19 autogyro, he worked with aerobatic pilot Gerd Achgelis toward perfecting a practical helicopter. His Fa-223 Drache was one of the few helicopters, along with the Flettner Fl-282 Kolibri and the Sikorski R-4, to see WWII service. In early 1942, the Kriegsmarine asked Focke-Achgelis to design a gyro kite to be...
